Youth activists criticise climate change inaction

(29 Sep 2021) Youth climate activists Vanessa Nakate and Greta Thunberg chastised global leaders Tuesday for failing to meet funding pledges to help poor nations adapt to a warming Earth and for delivering too much "blah blah blah'' as climate change wreaks havoc around the world.

They even cast doubt on the intentions behind a youth climate gathering where they were speaking in Milan.

"Well sometimes it really feels like everything has been decided for us because I've been in a working group and we were giving a number of suggestions but they didn't seem to be really welcomed and I think that was the feeling for many different activists," said Nakate to AP in a interview.

Four hundred climate activists from 180 countries were invited to Italy's financial capital for a three-day Youth4Climate summit that will send its recommendations to a major United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, that begins on October 31.

But participants are demanding more accountability from leaders and a bigger official role for young people.

It will be followed by a two-day pre-COP26 meeting aimed at finding common ground on sticking points among the participants, which include big emitting countries and countries that still lack electricity for all inhabitants.

"If you are to go net zero by 2030, it has to start now, not in 2030," said Nakate.

Meanwhile Palestinian activist Adam Aburok said the evet was a real opportunity to share ideas on climate change.

Ruth Łchavaya K'isen Miller, an  activist from Alaska also participated with high hopes for the future of her state ad community.

"We want to ensure that our environmental wellbeing will not be at odds of the success and the security of our people," she said.

Youth4climate runs until 30 September 2021, followed by the pre-COP26 which will run until 2 October 2021 in Milan.
