If left uninterrupted, every type of crime proceeds in the same way; people message other people in the same order, acquire and trade items in the same order and go into hiding in the same order. The speed at which this happens depends somewhat on chance but you shouldn't have people vanishing for no reason. Your involvement in the case will change the flow of things, of course, be it slowing things down or stopping them dead in their tracks.

To best master this game, you need to learn how the many criminal cases play out so you know who to go for and when. The best time to grab someone is when they've sent all the messages they need to, have gained and given away any item they make and are about to go into hiding. At this point, arresting them doesn't harm the case in any way but it also means that the crime is one step ahead of you. Of course, turning them is more ideal but you don't always get that opportunity.
