Sky News host Andrew Bolt says Kevin Rudd’s campaign for a Royal Commission into the Murdoch media has “caught on” with a new campaign being run by Sally Rugg.

“This week a campaign, apparently well-financed, will be launched to demand that Royal Commission he (Rudd) wants,” Mr Bolt said.

“The woman running this is Sally Rugg, who used to work for the left-wing GetUp! organisation … and now as head of this new campaign, she says please join me in standing up to Murdoch’s media monopoly and fighting for a strong, diverse, and fearless media.

“When she says diverse, though, she’s actually pulling your leg, because she in fact means she wants it less diverse.”

Mr Bolt said “already a couple of things seem dishonest” about Sally Rugg’s campaign.

“First of all, there is no Murdoch media monopoly, in fact, the media is more diverse than ever,” he said.

“Now I am sure Sally Rugg is not working for free as head of this campaign. And at the bottom of her website I read … that she is based at 54 Victoria Street, Carlton, in Victoria, which happens to be the headquarters of the Victorian Trades Hall Council, union central, and the secretary there ... is Luke Hilikari, who used to work for Premier Daniel Andrews and is a strong supporter of him.

“And federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese isn't unhappy about Kevin Rudd's call for a Royal Commission into the Murdoch media, either, he'd love us scared into silence.

“We did put in calls to Trades Hall, trying to reach Sally Rugg, and ask who’s funding her campaign. No answer. We’ll let you know if there ever is.”
